Although as motorcyclists we represent just 0.7% of road traffic in Wales, unfortunately we account for 24% of killed or seriously injured road casualties.

Many of us bikers are also drivers but depending on which mode of transport we use on a particular day, we are drastically more at risk of being involved in a serious or fatal collision when we are travelling on a motorcycle. Latest figures for Wales show that motorcyclists are 50 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than car or taxi occupants.

Reducing motorcycling casualties across Wales remains a key priority for partners in Road Safety Wales and raising awareness of the increased level of risk experienced by riders of motorcycles is one of the measures being used.

There were 504 motorcyclist casualties reported by police in 2022 with 244 of those being killed or seriously injured.

Introduced in 2022, the 'hierarchy of road users' places those road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy. It does not remove the need for everyone to behave responsibly. It’s important that all road users:

• are aware of The Highway Code
• are considerate to other road users
• understand their responsibility for the safety of others.

Data shows that the proportion of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured is highest in the 45-69 age group and that more motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured on a weekend during 2022. We are all acutely aware that even though a motorcyclist may not be at fault, their vulnerability invariable means that they suffer more serious injuries in a collision.
