At this time of year, we are likely to see a lot more motorcyclists enjoying the freedom of riding on the wonderful scenic roads Wales has to offer. With that freedom comes a responsibility on bikers to put safety first and always ride in accordance with the law and appropriate to the traffic conditions.
In Wales, a person using a motorcycle is 58 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than they are when travelling by car. Motorists sharing the road responsibly can help improve this concerning situation.
Chair of Road Safety Wales, Rhys John-Howes, said: “Drivers can contribute to rider safety by giving motorcyclists more time and space and by being extra vigilant to their presence, particularly when emerging from junctions and changing lanes. Motorcyclists can be on any road at any time, so observation is key to avoiding collisions.
“Motorcyclists are reminded to make thorough checks on their bikes to ensure that they are ready for safe use, particularly if returning to the road after a break. Preparation is vital - take a close look at your protective kit and pay particular attention to the condition of the motorcycle’s tyres, brakes and lighting - it could save your life.
“Just as important is the rider ensuring they are well-prepared, by never taking to the road tired, angry, or impaired by drink or drugs.”
Through www.walesbybike.com motorcyclists can access details of post-test training and assessments to enhance skills and knowledge, many of which are supported by Welsh Government funding.
Rhys John-Howes added: “Although a motorcyclist may not be at fault in a collision, their vulnerability invariably means that they suffer more serious injuries. Road Safety Wales is encouraging motorcyclists to be pro-active, by taking full advantage of opportunities to build on their experience through attending the available initiatives.”
As we enter the period which sees an increase in motorcycle use, police engagement and enforcement will be undertaken to promote rider safety and to address illegal and anti-social riding and driving. Preventing casualties across Wales and ensuring road users arrive home safely is of utmost importance.
Chief Inspector Shaun Bowen said: “The safety of motorcyclists in the Dyfed-Powys Police force area and across Wales is paramount. Throughout the coming months we will be engaging with motorcyclists at a variety of different events, promoting Operation Apex – the national motorcyclist campaign.
“Like much of Wales, Dyfed-Powys geographically has excellent roads which we encourage visitors to utilise, however, we want them all to be safe.”
