Tyre Safety Month

Tyres are the only part of your bike in contact with the road surface so it’s essential to make sure they’re safe and legal before every journey.

Steering, acceleration and braking all depend on that small area of rubber touching the road, so if your tyres are past their best it could result in a fine, penalty points or could even cost you your life.

Tyre Pressures

You can find the recommended tyre pressures for your bike in the handbook. It’s best to check them from cold and make sure you re-fit the dust caps afterwards! Tyre pressure that are too high or too low can affect the handling of your bike.

Tread Depth

Check that the tread depth of both tyres is not below the legal minimum of 1mm (bikes over 50cc). Ideally, change them well before they get to this point and make sure that both tyres are made by the same manufacturer, with the same tread pattern.

Tyre Condition

Ensure that your tyres have no cuts, bulges or objects embedded in the tread and that they’ve worn evenly. If you’re unsure whether they’re still safe to use, it’s worth checking with a qualified professional.

Be honest with yourself when choosing new tyres – most of us hate having to fork out for them but it’s so important that they fit correctly and suit your specific needs; for example, the different weather and temperatures you usually ride in, the kit you carry with you and if you take a pillion.
