A factsheet aimed at motorcyclists and their employers is available from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in Wales.
Employers have legal obligations to manage the safety of staff who may use motorcycles to carry out their normal work duties or for occasional work journeys such as travelling to other work locations for meetings. There are also powerful ethical and business reasons for organisations to help their employees stay safe when they are riding motorcycles or scooters for commuting, domestic or leisure purposes.
Unlike car drivers who can rely on ‘secondary safety’ features such as impact protection, seatbelts and airbags, motorcyclists have to rely almost entirely on ‘primary safety’, which means using their skills and experience to safeguard themselves by avoiding crashing in the first place.
Introducing rider assessments will indicate how competent each motorcyclist is to undertake the riding their job requires safely and it will help identify those who are likely to be at the highest risk and in need of additional training and support.
Different approaches may be needed for different kinds of rider. Riders of scooters, mopeds and light motorcycles may feel that they do not have so much in common with riders of sports bikes or US style cruisers. Trainers can offer options for scooter riders which will address their particular needs.
The Welsh Government kindly subsidise a number of motorcycling initiatives in Wales. You can find out more by visiting our Courses page or by getting in touch with your local road safety team.
