Motorcycling in Swansea

Swansea Council’s road safety team has been busy coordinating Ridersafe and Dragon Rider training courses for local riders. Both courses are subsidised by the Welsh Government and target two very different groups of riders.

Ridersafe offers 16 -24 year olds a wraparound course to the Compulsory Basic Training, which provides young and new riders with skills, knowledge, awareness and experience. Under the watchful eye of a qualified DVSA motorcycle instructor, Ridersafe’s aim is to assist with reducing casualties within this young and inexperienced road user group. The training specifically targets low powered 2 wheel riders (50cc to 125cc) and consists of three modules. On completing Module 2 a DL196 certificate is issued by the instructor and after Module 3, advice and feedback is provided to encourage safer riding.

Dragon Rider is a post-test training course which follows the DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme syllabus and develops a rider’s skills, knowledge and confidence. Qualified instructors pass on their expertise so that riders can improve and get more out of their riding.

The full day of training consists of a short discussion at a local fire station in Swansea, followed by a ride-out using communication systems to assess individual rider standards. As well as an on-road assessment, instructors give comprehensive and personalised feedback to instil good and safe practises to riders. On completion of the training, DVSA certificates are issued to all riders.
